Trial and Error :(

So... an update for the little seedlings...

Let's just say I'm learning a whole bunch more and more each day.

The newest update is the tomatoes and corn have sprouted (several days ago... now it's the peppers making the biggest development)

The first time I planted corn (only to later be eaten by some blasted deer) it was crazy to see how it grows. They get these little rat tails for a roots.

Not sure if you can see them all that well, but its just insane... that's when we decided to transplant them to another (bigger) container.

This is the progress they have made thus far... and to think its only been 2 weeks since we planted them.

(Please note my not so good photoshop skills... it was my first attempt with an online tutorial as my only help...)

So these have been the great things about our seeds... now to that not so great :(

I have learned a new gardening term : "Leggy"

Leggy-
1. Having disproportionately long legs: a leggy colt.
2. Informal Having attractively long, slender legs: a leggy dancer.
3. Having long, spindly, often leafless stems: a leggy houseplant.

Obviously it is the last definition... so all those beautiful plant that were sprouting like little champs were only wanting some attention from the sun. Apparently a windowsill approach isn't the most successful. The broccoli, cauliflower and the lettuces were wanting more sunlight so they shot off searching for sunlight... causing them to be ridiculously long, spindly and flimsy.

But not worries... we've come with the perfect solution (thanks to the internet and all those who post their success stories!)

We now have a grow light.

Jason installed it this morning and the little plants are doing great... its just a little funny that its in one of our cupboards... so when we close the doors there's this funny pink light coming from all the cracks.

But its all good.

The tomatoes are on the right. In the middle are the leggy seedlings that we are hoping to strengthen up (or we'll just replant more seeds). And on the left are the peppers.

They all seem to be responding very well... but it's only day one with a new light supplement.

But so far so good... I can already taste the homemade salsa!

good job sarah! I don't have the patience to start my plants from seeds. I do love the homemade salsa though! Congrats on the Anniversary. It does go fast.
